For couples travelling from the northern hemisphere, the appeal of a southern destination wedding is often the light. An October wedding in Cape Town is a summer wedding. A December wedding in Mauritius is warm, golden, and out of phase with the European winter. The seasonal inversion is a gift - you get to choose weather rather than accept it.
South Africa is most reliable from October through April. These are the dry, warm months across most of the country. Cape Town and the Winelands hit their stride in November and February, with February often the single most beautiful month for light. March and April are underrated - the crowds thin, the air softens, and the vineyards shift colour.
Mauritius runs on tropical seasons. The window most couples want is May through November, avoiding the cyclone season. October is particularly lovely - warm but not oppressive, with reliable light and fewer guests at the island's best resorts.
For the Garden Route and coastal South African weddings, avoid the high winds of late October and early November if you can. The light is beautiful, but the wind can test outdoor ceremonies. Mid-summer (December to early February) is more reliable for coastal events.
A practical note: if you are flying international guests in for a southern hemisphere wedding, aim for dates that fall in northern winter. Your guests will thank you for the escape, and you will have their full attention - no one is distracted by what is happening at home when they have just left snow for the Indian Ocean.
